Liverpool are making strong progress towards securing their ideal January signing, as the player reportedly decides to leave their current club amid interest from Anfield.

Liverpool have received a significant boost in their pursuit of a dream January signing, following developments in the player’s situation.

Under new manager Arne Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool made only one signing in the summer transfer window—Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £12.5 million. The Italian winger has managed just three appearances across all competitions. Despite the lack of additions, Liverpool sit eight points clear at the top of the Premier League after 12 matches.

Fresh reports indicate that Liverpool may reignite their interest in Spain and Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi to strengthen their squad while leading the league. Zubimendi, identified as a priority target last summer, was willing to make the move, but ultimately chose to stay at his boyhood club. Liverpool were prepared to pay his €60 million (£51 million) release clause at the time.

According to Spanish outlet TDF, Zubimendi now regrets his decision to remain at Sociedad and is reportedly “counting the weeks” until a move to the Premier League in January. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously suggested Liverpool could revisit their interest, and this seems increasingly likely despite Ryan Gravenberch’s strong performances in a deeper midfield role.

Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring Zubimendi, but Liverpool remain confident they can secure his signature. The Reds are even prepared to make him one of their highest-paid players.

While Zubimendi was expected to receive a new contract after staying in San Sebastián, no such offer materialized. Reports suggest Sociedad may now be open to selling him.

Journalist David Lynch highlighted why Zubimendi remains a priority for Liverpool, stating in September:
“I still think Liverpool will want a number 6 – someone who fits their profile better than Endo. Zubimendi ticks so many boxes for them. It’s potentially one to watch for January.”
