Liverpool have reportedly initiated discussions to secure a £40m-rated player, previously linked with Manchester United, as their priority target for a key role under Arne Slot.

Liverpool appear to be making headway in their search for a new left-back, with reports suggesting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been identified as a priority target. The position has become a significant focus for Liverpool’s recruitment team, given Andy Robertson’s decline and the lack of a clear first-choice between him and Kostas Tsimikas.

Arne Slot, who brought in just one player—Juventus winger Federico Chiesa—during his first transfer window, is not expected to oversee a major January overhaul. However, plans are underway for potential signings either mid-season or next summer.

Recent weeks have seen several left-backs linked with Liverpool, including Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Ipswich Town’s Leif Davis. According to Anfield Watch, Kerkez has emerged as the leading candidate, with Liverpool reportedly approaching Bournemouth for permission to initiate talks.

The 21-year-old Hungarian international has drawn significant interest since joining Bournemouth last year. After settling in during his first season, Kerkez has stood out this campaign, with two assists underscoring his attacking potential. His performance against Manchester City further solidified his reputation.

Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, is familiar with Kerkez, having signed him during his time at Bournemouth. The Cherries are reportedly open to selling, with a £40m price tag quoted over the summer amidst interest from Manchester United.

United, also in need of a left-back due to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness struggles, may enter the race as new manager Ruben Amorim considers a back-three system. However, Liverpool’s Champions League qualification gives them a potential edge in the pursuit of Kerkez.

While it remains unclear whether talks are for a January move or next summer, Slot’s rotation of Robertson and Tsimikas suggests the need for a more consistent first-choice. Slot recently praised both players but hinted at the demands of the role.

“We have two very good full-backs, and we play many, many games,” Slot said before Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa. “Both need their minutes because it’s a position that requires significant effort. The rotation reflects both quality and workload management.”
