Real Madrid plans to part ways with one of their current stars if they secure their top transfer target in 2025.

Alphonso Davies’ move to Real Madrid is now seen as almost inevitable. The Spanish giants have pursued the Canadian star for over a year, while Davies has resisted significant pressure from Bayern Munich to fulfill his dream transfer.

Recent reports suggest that Davies has reached an agreement with Real Madrid, with the deal nearly finalized. Although his agent has publicly denied these claims, it’s believed the denial was simply out of necessity. If Real Madrid manages to sign Davies on a free transfer, it would be one of the biggest coups of the 2025 summer transfer window. However, his arrival brings certain challenges.

A Left-Back Logjam

According to MARCA, Davies’ addition will exacerbate Real Madrid’s already crowded left-back position. With Carlo Ancelotti currently relying on Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia, Davies would undoubtedly become the first-choice starter, leaving the club with excess options in the role.

To address the situation, Real Madrid is expected to sell either Mendy or Garcia. Carrying three players for the same position is impractical, and the club will consider offers for both players. However, there’s uncertainty about who will ultimately depart.

On the surface, retaining Mendy, the more experienced of the two, seems logical. Yet, his dissatisfaction with a bench role could cause friction. In contrast, Garcia has been content with a backup role, making him a more adaptable choice to remain in the squad.

Additionally, Davies’ signing would likely close the door on Miguel Gutierrez’s potential return to the club from Girona, as the left-back department would already be overcrowded.
