Report: Real Madrid targets ex-Atletico Madrid star to boost defense
Real Madrid is actively searching for a new defender following Eder Militao’s season-ending injury, which is expected to keep him out for at least nine months. Among the names on their list are Aymeric Laporte, Castello Lukeba, Jonathan Tah, and Ajax youngster Jorrel Hato.
According to MARCA, Real Madrid is now also considering Mario Hermoso, a former Atletico Madrid player, as a possible reinforcement. The 29-year-old, who came through Real Madrid’s academy but left in 2017 without making a senior appearance, joined RCD Espanyol before spending five years at Atletico Madrid from 2019 to 2024. He then signed with AS Roma this past summer as a free agent.
Hermoso, now a regular starter for Roma, has reportedly attracted interest from his former club. Real Madrid values his La Liga experience and versatility, as he can play both as a center-back and left-back. His familiarity with the club and his ball-playing skills further enhance his appeal.
While Hermoso has adapted well to Italy, he would be open to returning to Spain. However, with a contract until 2027, Roma may demand a significant fee for the Spanish international, especially since he joined them less than six months ago.
