Ruben Amorim shares his reasons for accepting the Manchester United job, explaining that it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

Ruben Amorim admitted it was difficult to leave Sporting CP in the middle of the season but acknowledged that the chance to become Manchester United’s head coach was an opportunity he couldn’t ignore.

The 39-year-old will oversee his first match as United’s manager on Sunday, replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. His first challenge comes with an away trip to Ipswich Town.

Amorim wrapped up his final games with Sporting before making the move to United during the November international break. In an interview with Gary Neville for Sky Sports, the former Portugal international explained why he chose to leave his home country for his first Premier League role.

He said, “It was really hard, but I had to do it. I had already spoken to other clubs, so it wasn’t unusual. But I felt that this was the right place at the right time for me.”

He added, “Leaving Sporting in the middle of the season was tough—no matter how big Manchester United is, it’s hard to leave your team during the season. But I had to make that decision.”

Amorim acknowledged the initial overwhelming feelings but soon focused on his new role. “I was obviously happy, and you can see that in every interaction I have. At first, it was a bit overwhelming, but within minutes, I started thinking about the club, the team, and how to play, and it became very exciting.”

With United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and only one win from four Europa League matches, Amorim has a lot of work ahead as he aims to turn the team’s fortunes around. He will face the media for the first time as United’s head coach

on Friday.
