“This is where I belong” – What Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said to Gary Neville during their first encounter.

Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, has expressed that he has no regrets despite facing the difficult decision to leave Sporting Lisbon.

Amorim was unveiled as United’s head coach in the same week Erik ten Hag was dismissed by Ineos, though his agreement with Sporting meant he officially took charge during the November international break.

Now nearing the end of his first two weeks as manager, Amorim is preparing for his debut match, with United set to face Ipswich Town on Sunday. Ahead of the game, the Portuguese coach sat down with former United captain Gary Neville for an interview.

Reflecting on his move from Lisbon to Manchester, Amorim shared the emotions he experienced. “I’d had discussions with other clubs before, so it felt normal, but at that moment, I knew this was my place,” he told Sky Sports.

“I felt it was the right club at the right time for me. Leaving Sporting was incredibly tough—especially mid-season—because while it’s exciting to join Manchester United, you’re also leaving your team behind.

“Still, it was a step I had to take, and I was so happy. You can see that in every interview I’ve done. At first, it felt overwhelming, but after a few minutes, my focus shifted to the club, the players, and planning how we’d play. It became quite exciting.”

Neville’s full interview with Amorim will air at 3 PM on Sunday, leading into United’s match against Ipswich. A win in his Premier League debut could push United into the top half of the table, just shy of European qualification spots.
